The Song Bird Music

Why are most songbooks edited?

You know, like when Elton John does a slammin’ solo on his piano and when they sell his music out, it’s sort of different from what he plays.

What is that supposed to mean? The artist messed up his own song?

No – it means that most people who would PURCHASE this (popular) music, only want the main essence, often the melody and chords in approximately the right rhythm – and could not play the original.

In the case of serious classical music, editions often have fingerings, performance notes, or the reconstruction of omissions or assumptions by the original composer.
