What does a swing part stand for in a musical theatre programme?
Okay so I have read loads musical theatre programmes and under a lot of the casts names where the part is displayed there is the words swing. What does it stand for? I figured it meant that it means they play lots of little parts throughout the show?
A person who is the “swing” is basically an understudy for a number of people, usually the ensemble. They might also have a regular role in the show.
For instance, a “female swing” would be someone who learns (most of) the female roles in the show, and is ready to step in if there’s a sickness, absence, etc.
