Musical Piano

What does it mean when a musical note (piano; whole) has a double vertical line on either side of it?
I was playing a piece by Ludovico Einaudi called “Inizio” and came across this notation–it is the first time I’ve seen it in looking at hundreds of pieces of music. Has anyone else ever seen this? Can you help me out?
A whole note with pairs of parallel vertical lines on each side would be a double whole note (8 beats). They are not very common, but they do exist. They are usually found as the last note in a piece or in time signatures with eight or more quarter note beats per measure, such as 4/2.
