Bard College Vocals Bang, Boom, Yes Sir! – Various Artists

Bringing in less than promised, the cheerful triple takes the stage with their tickling first number, by Britten. Not waiting for the audience to finish ‘seat-shuffling’, Miyake and Cook grabs everyone’s ears by displaying the character’s relationship through humor. Being stage professionals, the chemistry between Miyake and the audience is wonderful. Miyake brings delight every time she crosses the stage, and brings a sense that only she possesses. After the vibrant, and colorful number, the audience enters the solemn reading of a Spanish poem.
As Rodriguez ‘sings’ the solemn poem, the audience waits for a surprise. No comes, although the recent number was not carried out to its fullest, a well sounded applaud is given. Miyake’s entrance on stage brings many smiles again. Take me with you Soldier Boy was executed perfectly. And, for once, the accompanist, Bloniarz, was part of the act. Singing with passion, she brings the music to life.
Having sensed the pattern of the program, we prepare for Cook’s interested take on a Whitman poem. Lying back, not expecting much, Cook took me by surprise. He produced a great belting voice that could be heard by the outside passers glancing through the windows. Mr. Cook’s display soon covered the energy and sparkle that Ms. Rodriguez lacked earlier. I was quite ready for Cook’s next piece, but was unsatisfied with the outcome of his arrangement. Each individual piece in Alan Smith’s collection was played out perfectly. But, the transition between each segment was unsatisfactory. The pieces chosen were not – I may say – ‘fit’ for the audience. Moving aside from the unpleasing spots, one must applaud with admiration to Bloniarz. With the singers every step of the way, and bringing characteristic to the piano, he makes the program adjoined.
Having expected, the best was saved for last. Ms. Miyake traces back to Japan’s roots to sing to you a pretty Island song. The audience is presented with a Japanese song, with translations beforehand. As it ended, we are brought the old ‘Questions to ask’ 15 minute session. Coming to an end, I must say that the concert had been what I expected, and I left quite satisfied. Looking forward to sturdier concert, the coming semester, I give this one a 7.5 – 10 being the best.
