what is the difference between acoustic and classical guitar?
What is the different between acoustic guitar and classical guitar? are both of it sounds the same? And can classical guitar changed to be an acoustic guitar ?
First off, a nylon string/classical guitar *is* an acoustic guitar. A steel string guitar is another type of acoustic guitar, some times referred to as western or flat top guitar.
And as one poster correctly says – you can not, under no circumstance – put steel strings on a nylon string guitar. The tension of steel strings will tear the guitar apart. Not only will the neck be damages since it has no truss-rod reinforcement. The top braces is much lighter, so the top will give. Furthermore, the bridge will be damaged, plus the plastic bushings on the tuners tend to crack.
Although the three lower strings appears to be steel, they are no – just like the other poster here correctly states.
You can also not put nylon strings on a steel sting guitar. The strings are fastened differently and there is not enough tension in nylon strings to make the top vibrate properly. The bracing on a steel string acoustic guitar is heavier to withstand the increased tension of steel strings.
A nylon string acoustic guitar is totally different from a steel strings acoustic. The classical has a wider neck, the neck scale is longer and the action is higher – action is the height of the strings above the fret board.
The scale is the length of the vibrating string between the nut and bridge. A longer scale gives more distance between the frets and it increases the string tension. This, combined with the higher action and the wider (flat) neck makes these guitars actually quite hard to get your hands around for a lot of beginners even though the strings themselves are softer on the fingers.
The sound of the nylon string guitar is softer and rounder – more “mellow”. The steel strings have a sharper attack and a brighter sound.
The steel string acoustic guitar has a narrower neck and you can have the action lower than on a nylon string. Yes, the strings tend to be a bit harder on the fingers. However, if you start out with light strings and have the guitar properly set up, that should pose no problem.
Some of the steel string guitars, like the jumbo and dreadnought models have larger sound boxes than the classical guitars. However, you have other types, like grand concert as well as smaller ones as well. The larger ones have a bit more bass and more volume. The smaller ones less bass and a less volume. The volume and other sound issues depends of course also of the materials and build quality…
The steel string acoustics are more versatile instruments in general. If you want to play finger style and mainly classical and softer singer/songwriter stuff, then a classical/nylon string guitar is the thing. If not, get a steel string acoustic.
