Music Staff – Learn How to Read Notes on the Music Staff
Music notation was invented 1,000 years ago by an Italian monk called Guido of Arezzo. The “container” that he devised for all the notes to sit in is the music staff.
The staff (or stave) is a series of 5 parallel lines. It was thought to have been designed from the 5 fingers of the hand.
The staff can be compared to the rungs on a ladder. If you start on the bottom rung and climb up, you get higher. If you start on the bottom line of the staff and climb up, the sound gets higher.
It can also be compared to a ruler. Each line of the staff is like the increments on a ruler. If you measure the distance from the 1st line to the 2nd line, it is the same distance as the 2nd line to the 3rd line and so on.
A clef is placed at the beginning of the staff to give a fixed reference point. This is like the “You Are Here” sign on a map.
If a treble clef (or G clef) is written at the beginning of the staff, it is placed on the 2nd line up. This fixes the name of the 2nd line. The 2nd line is always G.
The 5 lines of the staff are:
E G B D F – “Every Great Band Deserves Fame”
On a piano, this represents every other white key.
If a bass clef (or F clef) is written at the beginning of the staff, it is always placed on the 4th line up. This fixes the name of the 4th line. The 4th line is always F.
The 5 lines of the staff are:
G B D F A – “Great Band Deserves Fame Always”
